The Darker Season

Summer of Sci-Fi is over. Between now and its return, we’ve several months to span.

As daylight shrinks and the nights grow longer, things will be getting darker. So too with the studio.

As Arkhelian moves into fall, the studio is shifting deeper into ruined worlds, impossible places, and the parts of our universes that become harder to explain the longer you look at them.

That means more cosmic horror across the site in the months ahead, including genre discussions exploring what cosmic horror is, where it overlaps with science fiction, and a return to post-apocalyptic fiction too.

Some of that exploration is already underway within Exile Machine.

A new series of discussions digs further into the universe behind the novel: the nature of the Exile Machine, Oryn, Liliss, the Temple of Oryn, and the questions left behind by a world where religion, technology, ruin, and forces beyond human understanding have become increasingly difficult to separate.

And then there is Botenlorn.

Our upcoming solo cosmic horror RPG pushes those ideas into a different form entirely: not simply reading about someone entering the unknown, but making the decisions yourself once you’re already inside it.

Don’t worry, we aren’t abandoning sci-fi!

Default State is still running, and as the ChromaSpyke serial moves into its final episodes, the story is moving somewhere considerably darker than where it began. And that’s saying something, if you’ve been keeping up.

The lines between bodies, machines, and human agency are becoming increasingly unstable. What started as a cyberpunk story about survival, stolen data, and the systems controlling the people inside them has been steadily turning into something stranger.

So this fall isn’t about abandoning science fiction for horror. It’s about following science fiction into the places where the boundaries start to disappear.

Exile Machine. Botenlorn. Default State. Cosmic horror, cyberpunk, grimdark, and whatever waits in the spaces between them. There will be some additional surprises along the way too.

Summer belonged to science fiction.

The darker season is here.
