Cyberpunk did not become softer. It’s become crowded.
One of the easiest criticisms of modern speculative fiction is that cyberpunk somehow lost its edge. The neon became nostalgic. The implant market was scraped and counterfeited. The megacities grew taller. But alongside them came post-cyberpunk, solarpunk, hopeful technological futures, cooperative systems, decentralized infrastructure, and stories where advanced technology did not automatically lead to exploitation.
So the conclusion became obvious to some people.
Cyberpunk has been diluted. It lost its punk. It became too optimistic, too soft.
But that’s the wrong diagnosis.
Cyberpunk didn’t lose its skepticism. People became more sarcastic… more cynical. Their tongue became sharper, while a lot of the vocabulary shrank into doomscrolling. And, cyberpunk’s descendants started answering its questions differently.
Once a genre becomes large enough, influential enough, and conceptually mature enough, it stops producing only variations of itself. It begins producing disagreements. Those disagreements become subgenres of the original.
Cyberpunk has always been especially vulnerable to being misread as anti-technology. It is not. Cyberpunk loves technology. LOVES IT. Implants, networks, synthetic bodies, artificial intelligence, virtual worlds, neural interfaces, biotechnology, weapons, machines, and every strange thing human beings might bolt onto themselves in an attempt to become faster, stronger, smarter, harder to kill, or slightly less human.
The technology is often the coolest thing in the room. And this is part of the point. The problem is rarely that the technology exists. The problem is who owns it. Who controls it. Who gets access and can afford it. Better still, who becomes dependent on it.
Cyberpunk is not frightened by the machine merely because it’s a machine.
It’s frightened by the systems that accumulate around the machine and the systems that form new machines.
That difference leaves the door open to plenty of optimism in the right hands, because once a genre spends enough time asking what happens when powerful technology develops inside exploitative systems, someone will eventually ask the obvious follow-up.
What if we built the systems differently?
That question does not destroy cyberpunk.
It creates a fork.
Traditional cyberpunk tends to assume that technological capability will emerge inside institutions already shaped by concentrated power. Corporations own the infrastructure. Governments are weakened, compromised, captured, or irrelevant. Information becomes property. Bodies become assets. Identity becomes marketable.
Technology expands what human beings can do while narrowing who controls the conditions under which they can do it.
Then the genre watches what happens—the topic of next week’s article.
Optimistic technological fiction begins from a different institutional assumption.

- What happens if medicine is treated as a public good?
- What happens if energy becomes abundant and decentralized?
- What happens if automation reduces human drudgery instead of simply destroying bargaining power?
- What happens if technology is designed around repairability, accessibility, sustainability, or collective ownership?
Same technological lineage. Different social architecture.
Eventually those differences become too large to remain under one genre label.
That’s not dilution. It’s differentiation.
Let’s take a look at one of the clearest examples of this: post-cyberpunk.
The technological environment remains familiar. Networks are ubiquitous. Augmentation is normal. Artificial intelligence exists. Biotechnology has advanced. Corporations remain powerful. Information moves faster than institutions can comfortably control. But the protagonist does not necessarily live outside society. They may have a job, a family, and institutional legitimacy. They might work for a government agency, a corporation, a university, or some other structure that traditional cyberpunk would instinctively treat with suspicion. The system may be compromised without being entirely illegitimate. Institutions may be flawed without being irredeemable. The central question changes.
Cyberpunk often asks whether an individual can survive the machine.
Post-cyberpunk is more willing to ask whether the machine can be repaired.
That is a significant philosophical split. Solarpunk pushes the disagreement further.
Solarpunk does not reject technological sophistication. It rejects the assumption that technological sophistication must necessarily produce alienation, extraction, ecological collapse, authoritarianism, or corporate domination. That makes it less an opposite of cyberpunk than a response to it.
Cyberpunk says: Look what happens when technological capability grows inside systems built around concentrated power.
Solarpunk replies: Then build different systems. Distributed energy. Local production. Public infrastructure. Repair culture. Ecological integration. Community resilience. Appropriate technology. Cooperative ownership.
Solarpunk is not simply cyberpunk with trees added. At its best, it represents a completely different answer to the same underlying technological question.
What kind of society are we building around our machines?
Cyberpunk assumes the answer has gone badly. Solarpunk asks what happens if it does not.
That doesn’t make cyberpunk obsolete. What it does is make cyberpunk foundational. You don’t get a proposed alternative until someone has articulated the problem clearly enough to argue against.
This is where the claim that technological optimism diluted cyberpunk starts falling apart.
The existence of optimistic technological fiction does not indicate that cyberpunk lost cultural power. It indicates the opposite. Cyberpunk’s questions became important enough that entire bodies of speculative fiction formed around competing answers.
A weak genre produces imitation.
A strong genre produces disagreement.
An influential genre produces descendants that eventually stop agreeing with their parent.
That’s not failure. That’s intellectual success and cultural penetration. Cyberpunk became important enough to be argued with. The deeper split isn’t really about technology anyway. It is about institutions. Put cyberpunk and solarpunk next to one another and the technological differences can be surprisingly small. Both can contain artificial intelligence, automation, advanced materials, biotechnology, etc.
The gadgets don’t directly tell you which genre you are reading. The ownership structures do. And the questions that roll off those structures separate cyberpunk from many of its more optimistic descendants far more clearly than whether the city has neon or solar panels.
The real disagreement is political economy. Cyberpunk assumes that technological progress does not automatically produce social progress. Its descendants begin experimenting with worlds where someone has managed to close that gap.
That creates another problem.
Optimistic futures require different kinds of stories. Cyberpunk has an extremely efficient narrative engine because broken systems generate conflict automatically. Scarcity creates conflict. Debt creates conflict. Surveillance creates conflict. Corporate ownership creates conflict. Hierarchy, dependency, the definition of human, post-humanism… it all creates conflict.
If your protagonist needs medicine that belongs to a corporation, you already have a story. If your protagonist’s memories can be seized because of a contract they signed twenty years earlier, you already have a story. If an employer owns the augmentation someone needs to remain employable, you already have a story.
Cyberpunk produces pressure almost effortlessly because the society itself is adversarial. Characters are all fighting, all losing, and all searching for a small win. There’s no chosen one. There’s no way to topple the system with one kill.
Optimistic speculative fiction loses some of those tools. If healthcare functions, medical debt stops being useful as a narrative threat. If energy is abundant and decentralized, energy monopolies disappear as a source of conflict. If housing is treated as infrastructure rather than speculation, one of the easiest mechanisms of coercion weakens. If communities control their own systems, megacorporate dependency becomes less plausible.
That doesn’t make optimistic fiction less serious. It simply means the writer has to find different pressure points and questions outside what cyberpunk is built to ask.
And that is why treating genre as territory creates so much confusion.
People sometimes talk about adjacent subgenres as though they are stealing acreage from cyberpunk.
More optimism, ecology, functional institutions, or cooperation means less cyberpunk. People need to grow up. Genres are not countries, they don’t need defensible borders. They branch, hybridize, specialize, split, and recombine.
Nobody believes punk music ceased to exist because post-punk emerged. Post-punk did not retroactively weaken punk. It took a set of existing ideas and pushed them somewhere else. Cyberpunk works the same way. Its descendants can reject some of its assumptions without invalidating the genre they came from. In fact, the disagreement makes the lineage more interesting.
Cyberpunk says concentrated technological power creates dependency.
Post-cyberpunk asks whether institutions can absorb that power without collapsing into domination.
Solarpunk asks whether technology can be embedded inside ecological and communal systems from the beginning.
Other subgenres will continue producing different answers. Some will be naive. Some brilliant. Some will become aesthetics without substance. Cyberpunk will survive those discussions too, because whatever comes next will propose more questions and more answers.
